“One of the greatest pleasures I find in the arts is to be astonished at human ability...Such a spectacle of gratuitous talent incites me, not only to praise the artist, but to praise God for giving such ability to human beings.” Gene Veith, State of the Arts

Auditions for
"January Thaw"
Here we go again!  The play for this fall is the comedy, "January Thaw", by William Roos, based on the novel by Bellamy Partridge.  Again, I have (un-purposely) selected a play that is mostly unknown on the internet.  The plot is as follows:  The Gage family is seeking peace and a chance for father, Herbert Gage, to write a "best seller."  So they settle down in a Pre-Revolutionary War Connecticut farmhouse they've just recently acquired.  Things don't go quite as planned when the former owners (Jonathan and Matilda Rockwood), who were supposed to be dead, show up with the intent of living there with the Gages.  A spirited contest for possession soon being, as neither family will back down.  Political affiliation, socio-economic background, and taste in home décor are just a few of the things that create an array of comedic domestic disputes.

Auditions will be Wednesday, August 28 and Thursday, August 29 from 3:10-5:00 in Mr. Madden’s room (218). At the audition, students will be performing cold reads of short selected scenes from the play. Students need only to attend ONE day of the auditions. Auditions are open to ALL secondary students. The cast will consist of 6-7 males and 6-7 females, depending on how I cast one of the characters.  The character breakdown is as follows:

Frieda (F) - Gage family maid
Herbert Gage (M) - Uptight father of the Gage family
Sarah Gage (F) - Pessimistic and outspoken 11 year old Gage daughter
Paula Gage (F) - Loyal 12 year old Gage daughter
Marge Gage (F) - Patient and supporting mother of the Gage family
Barbara Gage (F) - Adventurous 21 year old Gage daughter
George Husted (M) - Insecure fiancé of Barbara
Jonathan Rockwood (M) - Original owner, stubborn and outdated
Mathilda Rockwood (F) - Wife of Jonathan, also outdated
Loomis (M/F) - Gage family lawyer
Uncle Walter (M) - Hick neighbor, close friend of the Rockwoods
Matt Rockwood (M) - Unmotivated teenage son of the Rockwood family
Carson (M) - Local cop

Rehearsals will begin September 3 and will run from 3:30-5pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  Not every character has to be at every rehearsal.  Rehearsal schedules will be handed out once the cast has been determined.
The show will be performed Nov. 7-9 at the school.
I hope to see many of you at the auditions.  If you have any questions, just ask!
